If you own any voice recognition product, I thoroughly recommend the xTag USB Mic. I use MacSpeech Dictate and I hardly use the keyboard anymore. As a matter of fact, I'm not even typing this review right now. It's so much more convenient to grab the mic, clip it to your lapel and just talk. I highly recommend this item. I'm also a horrible speller. But, I don't have to worry about that, because the machine spells everything for me. If it makes a mistake I simply say, "scratch that" repeat the corrected word and it goes right on. The microphone is so unobtrusive when I dictate a letter are am charting patient notes, it's a breeze and sometimes, someone walkes into my office, I start talking to them... look back at my computer and realize my conversations on the screen. It's no bigger than a tube of lipstick. I have a very large monitor in my office, so I can be 5-8 feet from the USB wireless hub and it works just beautifully. Also I am using Rosetta Stone to learn other... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Works but not designed well, April 27, 2009

If you are using this device for dictation purposes, it works fairly well. I also use a wired headset and the headset performs slightly better, but not dramatically so.

I also wanted to use this device for talking on Skype and that is where I think that this device's design is not well thought out. The main issue is that they decided to put the the input jack for the headphone on the bottom of the mic right where the device attaches to the charger base. This means that everytime you want to use the device with the earpiece, you need to plug the earpiece in. Everytime you want to charge the mic, you need to unplug the earpiece. Also there is no on/off switch so you need to keep the mic in the charger, or else it will die pretty quickly. Good product if you are just looking for a wireless mic, not so good if you also want to use the earpiece too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wireless mic does the job, November 20, 2010

I bought this mic for sound reinforcement in the classroom after the students at the back of the room complained that my voice was trailing off during lectures. Now I simply clip the mic to my collar, plug the USB into my laptop, and my voice is projected over the room's AV system. It was effortless to set up and use on my Mac. I also record my lectures: I was using a separate battery-operated voice recorder, which meant I had to juggle SD cards after class to copy the files onto my laptop; now, I use Audio Hijack Pro to capture the audio stream coming off the xTag. Everything works very smoothly.

My only reservation concerns audio quality. This device is based on the DECT standard that is the basis of most current cordless phones. As such, it uses a pretty low bitrate, and a fairly simple digital encoding scheme. The result is a voice signal that is fine for projecting in a (relatively noisy) classroom, but gives recordings with audible quantization noise. The... Read more
